Ch. 6 Shopping Shenanigans

“Everyone keeps staring at you,” Kagome whispered, casting an accusing look at the crowd.

“I know I put on my shield to hide my true self from humans,” Sesshomaru reminded her.

Kagome huffed, “Yes you did, but you’re….”

Sesshomaru casted her an amused gaze, “I’m what?”

“You’re… You’re… You’re still too beautiful and it makes you stick out,” Kagome pointed out, her cheeks turning scarlet.

Sesshomaru stopped within the crowded mall and stared down at the Miko before him, “And this bothers you?”

Kagome hated to admit it, but it did bother her. But why would it bother her? Was she jealous? Kagome shook her head of that thought because she was not jealous. Why should she be? But when she looked up at him and saw those intense eyes, she knew that she was.

Kagome crossed her arms over her chest, “It only bothers me because it brings attention to us when we’re supposed to be incognito.”

“You do not have to remind me woman. I am being vigilant,” Sesshomaru told her. “But you can’t very well expect me to use any more demonic powers or I might expire for the day.”

Sesshomaru had a point and Kagome assumed that nothing more could be done about his good looks. Why was she blushing so much? This was simply ridiculous to have any of these feelings for this demon, especially Sesshomaru.

The Lord of the West put his hand on Kagome’s back and made her continue to walk. His hand did not leave her as they made their way through the crowd.

“By the way,” Sesshomaru began, getting her attention, “I enjoyed your compliment.”

Kagome didn’t think her face could get anymore red from this demon, but he has proven her wrong time and time again.

“Are you ill woman?” Sesshomaru questioned with an even tone. He didn’t sound concerned, but when he bent low to feel her forehead it told her otherwise.

When he did not feel a fever he straightened back up, “I do not feel a fever on you, but your face is flushed.”

Kagome saw the hidden smile on his face and knew that he realized why she was so beet red. “It’s just warm in here is all,” Kagome stated as she continued along with the crowd.

They got to their first store and a woman instantly greeted Sesshomaru and completely ignored Kagome. “Welcome to Atlas. May I help you with anything sir?” the lady inquired, viewing him with an appreciative gaze.

“I am merely shopping for clothing woman,” Sesshomaru said with disinterest.

The employee grabbed Sesshomaru’s arm in a familiar way and led him further into the store, “Then you have come to the right place sir. We have any style you can ever dream of. I would be more than happy to get your measurements so that we may accommodate you.”

Sesshomaru pulled his arm from her grasp, but she did not seem to notice how uncomfortable he was with her. He was being cautious when around other humans and kept an eye for anything potentially suspicious.

Kagome rolled her eyes as she was forced to follow them around. They got to the back where there was a wall of mirrors. The lady got out a loose measuring tape and began with his shoulders. She made a point to get very close to him.

“You have the broadest shoulders I have ever seen on a man. We may have to expand suit jackets if you’re looking for them,” the woman mentioned as she got to his chest.

She licked her lips with satisfaction. Kagome’s temper was beginning to rise and she didn’t know how much longer she could take this. Why was she getting so jealous over any of this? She hadn’t felt this jealous since InuYasha and Kikyo.

Kagome stopped her train of thought when she came to that abrupt conclusion. These feelings were the exact same as she felt almost seven years ago when she was back in the Feudal Era. She wasn’t in love with the demon, but she felt an uncanny need to be by his side, and she knew that her feelings would only grow from there.

“Kagome,” a distant voice called her.

“Kagome!” the roar of the mighty dog demon brought her back to reality.

“Y-Yes, I’m coming,” Kagome hurriedly rushed to him and saw that the woman was still making slow work at his measurements.

The sales representative smiled, “Is this your secretary? You seem to be a very important man.”

Kagome saw Sesshomaru’s agitated face as his nostrils flared with anger, “No, she is not my secretary.”

Kagome was about to help him, but the woman interjected once more, “Then she is your little sister perhaps?”

Sesshomaru shook his head, “No, she is not that either. Just hurry up.”

Kagome finally became fed up, “I’m his girlfriend you little hussy, and I would appreciate it if you got your hands off of him. This is not a professional establishment and I will be sure to let your boss know of your indecencies.”

The little Miko clutched Sesshomaru’s hand and began to lead him out of the store before anything else occurred. She was so pissed off that she could barely stand it. She was not a secretary, nor was she a little sister to anyone; especially Sesshomaru.

Kagome did not slow down until they were near the food court. She had forgotten that she was still holding Sesshomaru’s hand until she heard him clear his throat.

She gasped and released him, “I’m sorry Sesshomaru. It’s just…” She didn’t know what to say.

Sesshomaru shook his head, “Do not apologize. That female’s hormones were so predominant that it was beginning to irritate me. You rescued me yet again, although I have to ask, why did you say you were my girlfriend? You could have used another title to get your point across.”

Kagome became flustered, “I-It was a spur of the moment situation and I couldn’t think of anything else to say to her. She was pissing me off.”

“The feeling was mutual,” Sesshomaru sighed. “Although, I never realized that shopping could be so tiring.”

“You never shopped before?” Kagome inquired as they continued on their way.

Sesshomaru shook his head, “I always had servants do that for me. I had no reason to do such mundane tasks when I had an estate to run.”

“Speaking of your estate, who has been running it since you were captured?” Kagome became curious.

Sesshomaru thought for a moment, “I would suspect that Jaken has been taking care of my affairs until my return.”

“Why don’t you go back now?” Kagome asked.

“I cannot risk putting any more of my people in danger. I must destroy the Underground first before I can return,” Sesshomaru explained to her as they came to another store.

It was a somber thought when Kagome put it into perspective. He had a home, yet he was unable to return to it. It was the same situation for her. Now that she was involved she had no way of turning back until the ordeal was over. They were in this together until the end. It reminded her of when she teamed up with InuYasha and the group to destroy Naraku.

They were able to finally buy some clothes for Sesshomaru at a great discount store. Sesshomaru was skeptical, but he would not complain about what he was given. This situation has humbled him, but when they got to the Food Court, he did not know how much more humble he could be.

“Do you smell this Kagome?” Sesshomaru grimaced as they got closer to the ‘food’.

Kagome smiled, “Of course I do. It’s mall food. It’s cheap, but delicious.”

They came to the WacDnalds and got in line to wait for their turn. “I want a double cheeseburger with fries. How about you?” Kagome inquired with hyped excitement.

As they got closer Sesshomaru was not feeling exhilarated like Kagome. “I think I can wait until we get home,” Sesshomaru grunted with displeasure.

“Oh c’mon Sesshomaru; live a little,” she urged with enthusiasm.

Sesshomaru looked to the heavens, “If I must.”

Kagome went on, “Now that’s the spirit.”

The slaughtered cow on a toasty bun was staring back at Sesshomaru. It was sitting on the bright yellow wrapper that held it confined until now. The lettuce and tomato that were layered on top of it reminded him of his fate with this piece of processed meat. How did he stoop so low as to consume such fodder?

“Sesshomaru, you’re looking at it like it will kill you at any moment. Just take a bite already,” Kagome initiated as she was already halfway done with hers.

She got a fry and dipped it in ketchup before she popped it in her mouth. “It has been so long since I’ve had this,” she mentioned after she swallowed the fried morsel.

Sesshomaru gulped down as he picked up the hamburger in both hands and brought it to his lips. He finally took a bite and was met with the relief of something that wasn’t as bad as he thought it would be. The smell was a deterrent for him, but the taste was unexpected.

“See? It’s not as bad as you thought it would. Now have a fry,” Kagome offered him some of hers and she was glad when he took it without further analysis.

When their meal was complete Kagome cleared their trays, “What did you think?”

Sesshomaru leaned back in his chair, “A popper’s meal. I would only eat it again if I were in dire need.”

Kagome glared at him, “We are in dire need.”

The dog demon let out an irritated sigh, “And there you have it.”

Sesshomaru seemed a little tense, but she couldn’t blame him with the situation they were in. They had to be careful with everything that they did, or risk being put in danger. That made Kagome think of the risk she was putting on their family. She realized that they couldn’t stay at the shrine much longer. They would have to leave, but she did not know where they would go from there.

With how easily the Underground found her apartment, it would be easier to find them at the shrine. She bit her lip with nervous apprehension and wondered how much longer they could remain in hiding. Sesshomaru noticed Kagome’s change in attitude and wondered what she was thinking about.

“I think we need to start heading back to the shrine,” Kagome mused.

Sesshomaru agreed and they headed to the bus stop outside of the mall. Once they got in the vehicle they took a seat near the back. Sesshomaru leaned his head back and closed his eyes, conserving his energy until they got back to the shrine.

Kagome kept looking nervously out the window and Sesshomaru could feel the electric waves surrounding the Miko. She was charged for something and Sesshomaru had a suspicion that he knew what it was. He would talk to her about it when they reached their destination. It would be another hour before their stopped arrived.

“Next stop, Higurashi Shrine,” the intercom beeped.

Kagome slowly opened her eyes and realized that she had fallen asleep. She realized that she had laid claim to Sesshomaru’s shoulder as a pillow. She immediately sat up and held back a yawn.

“Did you sleep well Miko?” Sesshomaru asked her.

Kagome tried to straighten herself out. Sesshomaru pointed to Kagome’s hair and saw her cheeks burn with intensity. Kagome ran her fingers through it to try and tame the tendrils that went around her in bountiful waves. The bus stopped.

“I’m sorry again Sesshomaru. It feels like I’m always apologizing to you for one thing or another,” Kagome said as she bowed over and over to him at the steps of the shrine.

“You were tired, now cease your antics,” Sesshomaru commanded her. He stepped up to her and helped her with her hair, bringing it back to its original form.

“That’s better,” he mused.

The sun was beginning to set and the rays cast upon them with a glow of radiating pureness and serenity. Yellow banners decorated the woman in front of Sesshomaru and it made her look surreal. Her blue eyes dominated her face and in those depths he knew he could drown. But could he chance being swallowed by that sea of perfect cerulean?

She was a human and he despised humans, but he did not hate her. No, he had come to respect her for all that she had done for him. This Miko before him was changing him in ways that he thought were weak, and it reminded him of his father, Taisho. Is this what his father felt when he was with that human woman? Would that same weakness overtake him into the next realm?

Kagome was so close to him in that moment. He could feel the heat of her embrace him. His hands rested on her shoulders as he slowly bent low to her face. Her eyes were closed as she accepted was he was offering to her. But their moment was shattered like Kana’s mirror from the past.

“Hey sis! You’re finally home!” Souta yelled from the top of the steps. He made his way down the stairs to greet them at the entrance.

Sesshomaru stepped away with a growl and mentally bashed himself for his foolishness and the confusion deep within his mind. Kagome also distanced herself, looking down at the ground in fear of seeing Sesshomaru’s reaction to their interruption. He was going to kiss her, wasn’t he?

Souta reached the bottom and gave his sister a huge hug, “I would have arrived sooner, but I stopped by Grandpa’s grave to pay my respects.”

Kagome gave a softened smile, “Did you light the incense?”

Souta nodded, “Of course I did sis.” Souta then turned around and looked at the mighty Lord of the Western Lands, “Who are you?

Sesshomaru grunted, “I am Sesshomaru.”

“You mean the ‘Sesshomaru’? The one that my sis talked about during her adventures in the Feudal Era?” Souta asked looking up and down the demon.

Souta then looked confused, “But you don’t look like a demon. You look like a human.”

Sesshomaru cocked an eyebrow and gave an irritated look at the young pup. He did not respond as he ascended the stairs to the shrine, changing back into his true form on the way up.

“Hey! You have silver hair just like InuYasha. Are you two related by chance?” Souta quipped as he followed Sesshomaru closely.

Sesshomaru growled, “InuYasha is unfortunately my half-brother.” Sesshomaru looked back at Souta and scowled, sending a silent signal to back off.

Souta paled and skittered back to where his sister was, “He is a scary guy sis.”

Kagome glared at Sesshomaru’s back, “He is something alright.”

She saw the dog demon’s ear twitch and she knew he heard her irritated remark. He was still listening as she continued, “He will warm up to you in time. He likes mom well enough and he better like you if he knows what’s good for him.”

Sesshomaru shoved his hands in his pockets and kept silent until they made their way to the house. Once inside they could tell that dinner was almost ready just as promised early that very morning.

Kagome set some of the bags down in the living room, “Hey mom! We’re home!”

“Welcome home dear! Dinner is almost ready!” Mama Higurashi called out from the kitchen.

Souta was already helping in the dining room, leaving Kagome and Sesshomaru alone. Sesshomaru set his bags down next to Kagome’s. He knew he was going to get an ear full in 3…2…1…

“Sesshomaru, how could you be like that towards my little brother?” Kagome asked with an irritated voice.

Sesshomaru stared at her with his intense yellow eyes, “He is not my concern. Besides, we won’t be here much longer. We have to keep moving.”

Kagome had a shocked look cross her face, “How did you know what I was thinking?”

“I didn’t know. I merely guessed with how you acted most of the day. Your aura has been electrified and I know we’re putting your family in danger the longer we stay here,” Sesshomaru told her.

Kagome nodded her head, “Yes, we have to leave as soon as possible, but I don’t know where to go. We don’t have anywhere else to run to.”

Sesshomaru closed his eyes and thought for a moment, “We need a safe house. Let me think on it tonight.”

“Alright, but until then, please be nice to my little brother. You two are sharing a room after all, “Kagome mentioned.

Sesshomaru’s eye twitched at the information presented to him. Before he had time to respond Mrs. Higurashi announced, “Dinner is ready!”
